चन्दनं शीतलं लोके चन्दनादपि चन्द्रमाः।
चन्द्रचन्दनयोर्मध्ये शीतला साधुसंगतिः॥

Chandanaṃ śhītalaṃ loke chandanādapi chandramāḥ।
Chandra-chandanayormadhye śhītalā sādhu-saṅgatiḥ॥
हिन्दी अर्थ
इस संसार में चन्दन शीतलता प्रदान करता है, किन्तु चन्दन से भी अधिक शीतल चन्द्रमा है। परन्तु चन्द्रमा और चन्दन दोनों से भी अधिक शीतलता प्रदान करने वाली सज्जनों और संतों की संगति है।
भावार्थ: चन्दन शरीर को शीतलता प्रदान करता है और चन्द्रमा अपनी शीतल चाँदनी से सुख एवं शान्ति देता है। किन्तु सज्जनों और संतों का सत्संग मन, बुद्धि और अन्तःकरण को शान्ति प्रदान करता है। उनकी संगति से मनुष्य के क्रोध, अहंकार, ईर्ष्या और मानसिक अशान्ति का निवारण होता है तथा जीवन में सद्विचार, विवेक और आत्मिक आनन्द का विकास होता है। इसलिए सत्संग की शीतलता चन्दन और चन्द्रमा की शीतलता से भी श्रेष्ठ मानी गई है।
मुख्य शिक्षा: वास्तविक शीतलता केवल शरीर को ठंडक पहुँचाने में नहीं, बल्कि मन की अशान्ति को दूर करने और अन्तःकरण को निर्मल बनाने में है। यही सत्संग का वास्तविक महत्त्व है।
English Meaning
Sandalwood is known for its cooling and soothing properties, and the moon is considered even more cooling and pleasant than sandalwood. However, the company of virtuous and saintly people brings a peace and serenity that surpasses the cooling influence of both the moon and sandalwood.
Spiritual Significance: Sandalwood provides physical comfort through its cooling properties, while the moon offers a sense of calmness and tranquillity through its gentle moonlight. However, sādhu-saṅgati (association with virtuous and spiritually enlightened people) brings a deeper and more lasting peace to the mind, intellect, and inner being.
Such noble association helps dispel anger, ego, jealousy, and mental disturbances while cultivating wisdom, compassion, purity of thought, and spiritual understanding. Thus, the company of the wise is regarded as more soothing and spiritually uplifting than either sandalwood or moonlight.
Central Teaching: True peace is not merely the absence of physical discomfort but the tranquillity of the mind and purity of the heart. The association of noble and spiritually wise people provides this deeper peace.
